2021.09.25 22:33 Fordeka My thoughts and criticisms of Dr. K's Guide to Mental Health

I've finished most of Dr. K's Guide and wanted to share some thoughts and concerns.
Overview I liked some parts of this guide- I thought the Depression and Anxiety sections were solid. The samskara videos were actually some of my favorite in the guide. On the other hand, much of the Meditation and Ayurveda sections made me uncomfortable and honestly I have to say I've lost some respect for Dr. K and HealthyGamer. That being said, I'm a big fan of Dr. K and would like to be convinced I'm wrong.
Just to preface this, I've watched tons of Dr. K's content and love 99% of it. There are interviews he did that honestly gave me insights actual therapy didn't, which makes me really reluctant to make these criticisms- I even accept that maybe there is some emergent property of basing part of his practice on Hinduism and Ayurveda that makes him so effective, but I am just not able to see it.
I'm going to make some assumptions about the average person buying this guide,

I myself have had therapy and like to read about different therapies, I've been diagnosed with major depressive disorder and have been dealing with that for several decades, and have tried some alternative medicine.
Additionally, my impression of Dr. K before going through this guide was that he only used evidence-based, science-based practices. I feel like he's stated this 100s of times but I don't have a source so I may be wrong, though his personal and business websites seem to imply it. I know for sure "Harvard-trained psychiatrist" is everywhere in his content, which to me implies he's practicing the best of evidence based medicine. If I got the wrong impression then that's my fault- I just wanted to lay out my perspective.
The Meditation section To start with, I fully believe meditation is a beneficial practice as there is lots of evidence that it works, and there are insights in this section I think will really help people. The thing is, virtually all the insights that seemed useful to me I already knew from acceptance and commitment therapy (a mainstream therapy that's been around for 30 years), and just mindfulness therapy in general. So my question is- what reason is there to teach an introduction to Hinduism which is a religion and not evidence based, when you could teach therapies that are proven and even have scientific explanations behind them?
I know he mentions third wave therapy and that "eastern perspectives" have something that those therapies do not, but I'm struggling to see what that is. What really concerns me is that the average person coming into this will probably think Hinduism is better than therapy because it has these incredible insights and will pursue religion when they should be pursuing therapy. I see people in this community all the time who seem to take the Meditation section literally- believing in chakra, and similar supernatural concepts.
I'm not religious myself but I concede that there might be something beneficial to pursuing spirituality without religion, and perhaps religion itself does help people. I just think it's ethically questionable at best to throw religion at people who are desperate, vulnerable, and probably won't question it at all- especially as a psychiatrist.
The Ayurveda section I've seen the discussions about the lack of evidence for Ayurvedic medicine and I tend to agree, but my criticisms are different.
Framing Ayurveda as a legitimate practice This is one of the things that made me really lose respect for Dr. K and HealthyGamer.
I think alternative medicine in North America is an epidemic- chiropractic for example is a billion dollar industry despite having no evidence or valid scientific explanations. It's dangerous and has literally killed people, yet it's still a major competitor to physiotherapy. Before I knew better I wasted a lot of money seeing a chiropractor. My impression of chiropractors and other alternative medicine practitioners is that they don't care whether or not their treatments actually work, and don't care about the risk or consequences to their patients. Whether they are willfully ignorant or just not able to comprehend the ethical problems with this I don't know.
In this section, I don't like the way Dr. K frames Ayurveda as just another "perspective" on the same level as Western medicine when as far as I can tell, it's entirely based on pseudoscience and the evidence is poor quality. This seems irresponsible, as it could lead people who may be desperate and not know better to start seeing an Ayurvedic doctor instead of seeking evidence based treatment.
Just to get an idea of what to expect if I did see an Ayurvedic doctor, I google a few.
For example:
Most of the practices I looked at had the same elements:
Assuming this is the standard for Ayurvedic practices- how is it different from Herbalife, homeopathy, naturopathy, and other scam alternative medicines that lure you in by promising their expensive treatments will cure anything? What rational justification would anyone have to see an Ayurvedic doctor over a medical doctor?
Herbs Self-medication I think having herbs in a guide to mental health is an invitation to self-medicate. Even though he does give plenty of disclaimers, isn't it likely desperate people will just ignore them? It feels so unnecessary and potentially harmful to include this in the guide.
Herbs should be discussed with a medical professional before starting Would a doctor ever recommend or condone taking herbs? Would many doctors even know enough about herbs to give an opinion? I feel like this statement is pointless.
Use of toxic metals The wiki says toxic metals are commonly found in Ayurvedic preparations, even in the USA- and even suggests it may be intentional. In the Intro to Ayurveda video, Dr. K mentions this but says the contamination is accidental (though admittedly I don't know if he's talking about Ayurvedic preparations specifically). As a doctor, how can you possibly justify the risk to take these herbs?
Evidence based alternatives Again, like the Meditation section, I'm pretty sure there is lots of evidence-based science-based advice you could give relating to diet- so why resort to Ayurveda? It's true that advice won't be "individualized", but doshas seem like the most pseudoscientific part of this entire section. Following the dietary recommendations for any imbalance will probably result in you eating healthier and feeling better- it might have nothing to do with your doshas.
Conclusion Just to emphasize again, I really like Dr. K and his content has helped me a lot. I almost didn't post this but it really bothers me how so few people are questioning these parts of the guide- and it feels awful to see people blindly going down the path of religion and alternative medicine. I'm happy with the value I got from this guide and would buy any DLC- but I hope in the future Dr. K will move away from stuff like this. I think he's an incredible psychiatrist and probably doesn't even need any of this to be effective.

2021.09.25 22:33 justawayboop Best way to approach emailing a hiring manager to get an interviewer email, question about interview, business casual, and using school email.

I've been researching how to email a hiring manager and I can't find a specific Reddit post that can help me answer some questions. So, here is the story so far. I was giving an opportunity to be selected for an online engineering interview by HR in a couple of days. The interviewer is someone I don't know, but know the name of. My questions are
Should I asked the hiring manager for the interviewer's email, so I can follow up with a thank-you note after the interview? I can't find the interviewer anywhere (LinkedIn, etc). Or should I ask the interviewer for their email? Unless the interviewer gives me their email then this question wouldn't apply, but I don't think this would be good. Or should I email the hiring manager to forward my email to the interviewer? Furthermore, for assurance, emailing the hiring manager as well after the interview as a thank you should be good?
Furthermore, is it appropriated to ask the hiring manager what I should expect from the interview. In the email, it stated 15 minutes and business casual. Looking at their website, I know that the interview will have behavioral questions, but should I ask just in case? For business casual, I don't have a suit but have a dress shirt and a tie to wear. Is that acceptable? Or can I ask the hiring manager for more clarification? It seems like reddit likes suit and ties. . .
I used my school email for the internship application (should've used my personal) and I read online that it should be okay. So, it should be okay to email the hiring manager using my school email, or should I switch. The thing is the hiring manager used my school email to let me know that I got the internship. I think I should use the former for consistency and in the future change it to my personal email.
Sorry for all the questions. These may be obvious to answer, but I am too afraid to email HR without jeopardizing myself somehow. I can specify some more when needed. Thank you for answering my questions! :)

2021.09.25 22:33 TheFrazier Needed Tournament Change

My team forfeited a tournament game and like usual after a forfeit I just leave instead of waiting for the post game screen. In the tournament though it gave me a temp matchmaking ban??? This makes no sense. I shouldn’t have to be forced to watch post game screens when my team forfeited. I didn’t leave my team in an “unfair situation” since we all forfeited and the game ended.
